Typical Stages for I-485
Most I-485 cases move through the stages below, but not every case has every step, and the order can differ. Each code links to its page in our status code library.[3]
Biometrics
If USCIS needs your biometrics, such as fingerprints, a photograph or a signature, it schedules a biometric services appointment. Biometrics let USCIS confirm your identity and run the required background and security checks.[4]
Interview
USCIS policy is that adjustment of status applicants are interviewed by an officer unless USCIS waives the interview, which it decides case by case.[6]
Decision
USCIS orders and sends the decision notice. For an approved case, a welcome notice may follow.[3]

Will my I-485 case have an interview?
USCIS policy says every adjustment of status applicant is interviewed by an officer unless USCIS waives the interview. The decision to waive it is made case by case, so an interview code may or may not appear on your case.

Why does USCIS take my biometrics for an I-485?
Your biometrics, such as fingerprints, a photograph or a signature, let USCIS confirm your identity and run the required background and security checks. USCIS schedules the appointment at an Application Support Center.

What does a Request for Evidence on my I-485 mean?
USCIS issues a Request for Evidence when an officer needs more evidence to decide the case. It is not a denial. The request must state the deadline for your response, so read it carefully and consider talking to an immigration attorney.
